Ask AI assistant widget for Confluence

Use a Biel.ai AI assistant or AI search widget to answer questions from indexed Confluence content on a website you control.

Prerequisites​

  • A Biel.ai account and a project.
  • A Confluence Cloud space and credentials for pages you want to index.
  • A website that allows custom JavaScript to host the widget.

Add the assistant widget​

Confluence Cloud has no native Custom HTML setting for injecting these scripts. Atlassian's Custom HTML feature request documents this limitation.

  1. Connect your space using Confluence as a data source. Save the source and click Refresh sources to index it.

  2. On your external website, add these dependencies inside the head:

    <script type="module" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/biel-search/dist/biel-search/biel-search.esm.js"></script>

  3. Add the assistant before the closing body tag:

    <biel-button project="<YOUR_PROJECT_ID>"
        header-title="Biel.ai assistant"
        button-position="bottom-right"
        modal-position="bottom-right"
        button-style="dark">
        Ask AI
    </biel-button>

    Replace <YOUR_PROJECT_ID> with your project's ID from the Biel.ai installation code.

  4. Publish the external page and test a question about your indexed Confluence content. Link to that page from your space.

Limitations​

  • Indexing Confluence content does not install a widget inside Confluence Cloud.
  • Confluence page permissions are not inherited by the external widget. Configure access control for its readers.
  • Confluence Data Center customization is a separate setup and is not covered by this Cloud guide.

Troubleshooting​

Custom HTML not available

This is expected in Confluence Cloud. Host the widget on a site that permits custom JavaScript.

Assistant not answering questions

Check the project dashboard's loading status and Logs. Verify that the source credentials can read the pages you want indexed.

Assistant not appearing on the external site

Check that its CSS and JavaScript load, and that the project ID matches the installation code.
